'Fehivina' Special Programme - was telecasted by Television Maldives and broadcasted nationwide through Radio Maldives.
 

 


 

Special Supplement to be published - a four page supplement consisting of messages from the President, the Deputy Minister and UNEP Director, and with messages on actions that need to be taken in order to contribute to a better environment, was published and distributed with the daily newspapers.
 

 

 

Photo Display and Awareness Programme - on the theme 'Water for life' - will be held on June 6th and 7th at Iskandar School and Aminiya School coordinated by the Ministry, presenting the importance of water and disseminating information on environmental issues.
 

 

 

Message boards placed at various locations in Malé - displaying short messages on actions that need to be taken in order to contribute to a better environment.
 

 

 

A short Dhivehi drama - conducted on the same screenplay was presented in all schools nation wide on the Environment Day. The drama was created to convey messages to raise environmental awareness of the student community in the Madives.
 

 

 

Environmental information dissemination mobile unit - provided information on biodiversity and other environmental issues to the general public on Environment Day as part of the information dissemination programme being conducted by the Ministry under the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and Country Report to the COP; biodiversity enabling project. The unit proceeded along the main roads of Malé stopping at prominent locations.

Activities organised by schools, NGOs and other interested parties.

 

    Ghiyasuddin School - presented envelopes made reusing paper from discarded posters, calendar, wrappings, and others, to the Environment Section  in a special ceremony held at the Environment Section of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Housing and Environment on June 5th. Students from  Ghiyasuddin School presented 100 envelopes to the Deputy Minister Mr. Abdul Azeez Yoosuf of the Ministry. This ceremony was attended by Deputy Principal of Ghiyasuddin School, supervisors, members of the National Commission for Protection of the Environment, the Director General and senior officials of the Ministry.

 

  

 

 

Lhaviyani Atoll Education Centre - planted fruit and vegetable trees; programme to raise students’ awareness on the relationship between the environment and tourism; educated students on the advantages of using reusable cloth bags and teach the students to make cloth bags.

 

  Back to main Faafu Atoll Education Centre - planted trees in the school yard and in other open spaces on the island; held a special assembly on the occasion of environment day; provided information to the students about the value of water; held poster competition among the students.
 
   

Raa Atoll Education Centre - held a special assembly to mark the World Environment Day 2003; launched a campaign named “cloth bags instead of plastic bags”; held poster competition targeting the grade 1 to 5 students; held essay writing competition among the students of grades 6 to 10.

 

The members of the environment club travelled to Raa Kinolhas to implement the following activities in association with students from Kinolhas island:

 

Tree planting session; collection of information about the common trees in the island; inspection of waste collection sites; gathering information about beach erosion and cleaning the beach area of the island.
 

   

Haa Dhaalu Atoll Education Centre - a special assembly on June 5th was held and students was given the opportunity to speak about this year’s theme “Water- Two Billion People are Dying for It!”; tree planting program was held; cleanup programme was also held.
 

   

Thaa Atoll School - tree planting program to be held on June 6th to mark the World Environment Day.
 

   

Addu Atoll - special assembly in the schools were held in the morning to provide information about the environment. Volunteers from ‘Maavahi’ Association acted as resource persons; leaflet about the Environment Day and this year’s theme were distributed; special event was held in the evening, to conduct the environmental day drama, show environment awareness videos and conduct different entertainment and awareness activities. This event was open to the public; a special program to collect discarded batteries was carried out by students together with the Maavahi Association. An inspection of drinking water collections and the sewage systems of houses were also carried out; a row boat competition was held in the evening.
 

   

Muhibuddin School (Addu Atoll) - a banner depicting the environment day theme was displayed across the front of the school.
 

   

Seenu Atoll Education Centre (Addu Atoll) - a tree planting course was held for the teachers and prefects of the school; a tree planting program was held among the students; a clean-up program initiated by the students was held.
 

   

Hithadhoo School (Addu Atoll) - a poster exhibition illustrating the environment day theme was held in the school; a clean-up program initiated by the students was also held.

 
   

Addu Comprehensive School (Addu Atoll) - a school clean-up program was held.

 
   

Al-Madhrasathul Islamiyya (Addu Atoll) - a school clean-up program was held.

 
   

Maradhoo School (Addu Atoll) - an exhibition showing things relating to the environment day theme was held.

 
   

Irushaadiyya School (Addu Atoll) - a tree planting program was held by the school students; a joint harbour clean-up program in Maradhoo was carried out by the students and an NGO called “BlueMarine”

 
   

Maradhoo Feydhoo School (Addu Atoll) - a poster drawing and an essay writing competition was held among the students of grades 4, 5 and 6; a special informative video was shown to the students.

 
   

Feydhoo (Addu Atoll) - a tree planting and clean-up program was held.

 
   

Seenu Atoll School (Addu Atoll) - tree planting and clean up program were held.
 

   

Shamsuddeen School (Addu Atoll) – tree planting programme was held; awareness raising programme; school cleanup program was held; poster drawing competition was held.
 

    Hulhudhoo School (Addu Atoll) - special assembly was held to mark the day; a survey of the waste sites was conducted; a field trip to teach students about the importance of re-planting the endangered species of plants in the Maldives was held.
 
   

Laamu Atoll Education Centre - tree planting program; environmental quiz; school campus cleaning; programme to make useful handicrafts from waste items also took place.
 

   

Maldivers Diving Centre - a cleanup program of the northwest harbour was carried out on June 5, 2003. This programme was initiated in 2002 and this year's programme is dedicated to the late Mizan Hassan Maniku. A large number of Maldivian divers took part voluntarily in this event and collected large amount to waste from the lagoon bottom. The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Housing and Environment Mr. Abdul Azeez along with some members of the National Commission for the Protection of the Environment visited the site and were briefed about the programme.


 

   

Baros Island Resort - a tree planting program was initiated by the management and staff of Baros Island Resort; cleanup of the harbour was carried out by the staff and tourists in the resort.
 

   

Sonevafushi Rresort and Spa - a tree planting program was held in the island.

Sun Island Resort – tree planting programme at Sun Island Resort.    

 

   

Coco Palm Resort -  organized a special programme at the island of Hithaadhoo. Environmental Awareness workshop was held at the island. The workshop was inaugurated by the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Hassan Sobir. The workshop was attended by the members of community and school children. The workshop focused on the environmental infrastructures such as waste management. The participants visited the Hithaadhoo waste management site which was developed with the assistance from Coco Palm Resort. Hon. Hassan Sobir inaugurated a tree planting progamme at Hithadhoo. The tree planting programme is part of the Hithaadhoo greening campaign jointly organized by the Hithaadhoo Island community and Coco Palm Resort. Hon Hassan Sobir also unveiled environment billboards which have been located at strategic locations at Hithadhoo.

 

Additionally, following activities were also conducted by the Coco Palm: house-reef cleaning activity carried out by the dive team of Coco Palm, environmental quiz program; recycle innovation show, environmental art contest, and environment friendly walk.
