Mr. Abdullahi Majeed , Deputy Minister of Environment has been long associated with the work of the UN intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2007.

Mr. Majeed served as a Vice – Chair of the IPCC working Group II dealing with impacts, adaptation and vulnerability during the Panels Third Assessment Report in the period 1998-2002.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in 1988 to give policy makers neutral summaries of the latest expertise on climate change by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).  

Mr. Abdullahi Majeed currently working as a deputy minister of Environment, Energy & Water. He has served for over 35 years both in Meteorological and Environment sectors.


 

Members of the European Parliament express their willingness to support Maldives adaptation efforts; further meetings on the Commission’s Global Climate Change Alliance also held

Mr Amjad Abdulla, Director General at the Maldives Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water, and Mr Ahmed Sareer, the newly appointed chargé d’affaires at the soon to be established Maldives Mission to the European Union, have concluded two days of meetings with representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission. Mr Patrick McMullan from the Maldives Mission also attended the meetings.

Mr Abdulla, invited to speak at the European Parliament’s Temporary Committee on Climate Change, and Mr Sareer, met with the following key MEPs working on this important policy area:

• Mr Guido Sacconi, Italy, Socialist Group, chair of the temporary committee on Climate Change

• Ms Riitta Myller, Finland, Socialist Group coordinator on climate change

• Ms Caroline Lucas, UK, Green Group coordinator on climate change

• Ms Lena Ek, Sweden, Liberal Group coordinator on climate change

• Ms Romana Jordan Cizelj, Slovenia, EPP/ED (centre right group), coordinator on climate change

MEPs designated as coordinators act as an important conduit to their respective political groups providing input on the policy area in question.

The delegation also met with Ms Katrin Kowalczyk, office manager and principle researcher for MEP Mr Karl-Heinz Florenz, Germany, EPP/ED, rapporteur on climate change.

The Maldives delegation provided an overview of adaptation issues facing the Maldives as well as presenting, and requesting political support for the Male’ declaration on the Human Dimension of Global Climate Change released last November. Efforts by the Maldives Missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva on this issue were also shared.

The meetings also served to note the Maldives interest in the Commission's Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA).

All MEPs and officials that the Maldives delegation met were sympathetic to the Maldives cause and expressed their willingness to explore all possibilities of assistance towards the implementation of adaptation measures.

In addition to the meetings with the European Parliamentarians the delegation also met with Mr Walter Kennes, head of the sector responsible for the Global Climate Change Alliance at DG Development in the European Commission. The Global Climate Change Alliance was launched in September 2007 by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Development and aims to act as a link between the EU and poor developing countries most vulnerable to climate change, in particular the Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States.

The Maldives interest and input into the Alliance has included the presence of the President of the Maldives, H.E. Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, at the EU Development Days event in Lisbon in November 2007, and the sending of an official letter from The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Shahid, requesting that the Maldives be chosen as one of the initial pilot countries for the GCCA. Mr Kennes noted that a decision was expected in June.


“The Environment- Our Future” theme of Commonwealth Day 2008

A presentation on the Commonwealth Day theme for this year, “The Environment- Our Future” has been presented to participants of the official celebrations in Maldives.

Mr. Amjad Abdulla, Director General, Mr. Ahmed Jameel, Assistant Director General and Ms. Aishath Aileen Niyaz of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water facilitated this session, which was presented with the aim of raising awareness on national and global environmental issues among youth.

Youth participants from Commonwealth countries of the region, including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Bangladesh attended this session. The session was also attended by the Director and Head of Youth Affairs of the Pan Commonwealth Office, Dr. Fatiha Serour, and Regional Director of the Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Centre Mr. Raj K. Mishra. The session was held at the Seminar Room of Youth Centre.


High Level Delegation from Maldives Participates in the 10th Special Session of the Governing Council
Global Ministerial Environment Forum of UNEP

A high level meeting from Maldives participated in the 10th Special Session of the Governing Council /Global Ministerial Environment Forum, held at the Principality of Monaco, from 20-22 February 2008. The delegation consisted of Minister of Environment, Energy and Water Mr. Ahmed Abdulla as head of the delegation, Mr. Abdullahi Majeed, Deputy Minister and Mr. Amjad Abdulla, Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water.

Minister Ahmed Abdulla addressed at the conference on behalf of the Maldives. In his address, the Minister noted on the vulnerability of the Maldives, and highlighted on the importance of adaptation measures to protect the fragile islands from the looming threats of global warming and sea level rise. The Minister also stressed on the importance innovative technologies and financial assistance to implement adaptation measures in the Maldives.

Mr. Abdullahi Majeed, Deputy Minister, participated as a panelist in the special event on “Oceans, Coasts and Climate Change”. In the panel discussions, Mr. Majeed stressed on the relevance of the topic to the Maldives, and noted that Maldives would be an ideal laboratory for experimentation on adaptation measures for impacts to oceans and coastal environments from climate change.
