Ceremony held to mark Grid Connection of 250kWp Solar PV System at Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo island

A ceremony to mark grid connection of 250kWp roof mounted solar PV system at GDh.Thinadhoo was held this morning at Thinadhoo School. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, MP of Villimale Constitutency Hon. Ahmed Nihan Hussainmanik, MP of Thinadhoo North Constituency Hon. Saudhulla Hilmy, MP of Thinadhoo South Constituency Hon. Abdulla Ahmed, Minister of State for Environment and Energy Mr.Abdul Matheen Mohamed, Minister of State for Finance and Treasury Mr.Ahmed Munawar and Managing Director of FENAKA Corporation Ltd Mr. Mohamed Nimal. The ceremony was also attended by members of Thinadhoo Council, staff from government institutions, school children and general public.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim emphasized on the vast spending by government of Maldives on importing fuel and its burdens on the economy of Maldives. He also stressed the importance of renewable energy, energy efficiency and highlighted some of the energy sector initiatives of the government, including government objective of installing renewable energy systems up to 30 percent of the day time peak demand in all inhabited islands within next 4 years. Moreover, he thanked the President H.E Abdulla Yameen for the guidance and support, and also he thanked all concern parties for their support rendered during the project implementation to make the project a success.

The Solar PV component of the “Clean Energy for Climate Mitigation Project” was carried out in 2 phases. Under the first phase 308kWp solar photovoltaic systems were installed in 3 buildings (Thinadhoo School, Aboobakuru School and Powerhouse Building). Under the second phase 250kWp solar photovoltaic systems were installed in additional 2 buildings (Dr.Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital and Mosque). In addition to the solar PV component, energy conservation and efficiency activities were also carried out as part of this project. In this regard, energy audits of 20 different places were conducted, which includes government buildings, private offices and households. Based on these findings, energy efficient inverter air conditioners LED bulbs and LED tube lights were provided to selected government institutions. Also 5,000 LED bulbs were distributed to households under the energy efficiency demonstration component.

During today’s function demonstration equipment were symbolically handed over to the selected institutions by MP Ahmed Nihan Hussainmanik, MP Saudhulla Hilmy, MP Abdulla Ahmed and Mr.Ahmed Munawar, Minister of State for Finance and Treasury.
