Contract awarded to conduct Technical Analysis of market to develop Energy Efficiency Labels and Standards Programme in the Maldives

Contract was signed today to conduct Technical Analysis of Market to Develop Energy Efficiency Labels and Standards Program in the Maldives. The contract worth MVR 254,646 was awarded to CDE Private Limited and it will to be completed by February 2017.

Minister of State for Environment and Energy, Mr. Abdul Matheen Mohamed signed the contract on behalf of the Ministry and Sustainable Development Consultant Mariyam Hana Saeed signed the contract on behalf of CDE Private Limited.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony Minister of State for Environment and Energy, Mr. Abdul Matheen Mohamed said that the main objective of the technical analysis is to assess the characteristics of appliances imported to the Maldives and to capture baseline appliance market data in the Maldives. The results of the analysis will be used to inform and support government decision-making on the most suitable Energy Efficiency Labels and Standards in the future.

The analysis will focus on the following 9 appliances imported to the Maldives – air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, and combinations, electric fans, lights (indoor and outdoor), water pumps, electric ovens, televisions, and electric water heaters.

This activity is carried out by “Strengthening Low Carbon Energy Island Strategies” project, which is implemented by Ministry of Environment and Energy (MEE) assisted by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and financed by Government of Maldives and Global Environment Facility (GEF). The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through increasing energy efficiency in the building sector by developing appropriate policies, guidelines and standards.
