Stakeholder workshop held on preparing roadmap for low carbon development of energy sector in the Maldives (2018 – 2025)

As part of the government’s pledge to increase economic development through clean energy, Ministry of Environment and Energy, with the aid of Asian Development Bank is developing a road map for the low carbon development of the Maldives Energy Sector. The current policies and development plans of the energy sector were reviewed to develop this roadmap. The policy goals that have been achieved were also identified during the process of formulation of the roadmap. Advice from international experts was also sought during the process. A workshop was conducted in Hotel Jen to share the roadmap with government authorities and relevant stakeholders for feedback today, 14 May 2018.

The objective of the Roadmap for Low Carbon Development of Energy Sector in the Maldives (2018 – 2025) is to reduce the fuel dependency by 70 percent using clean energies and implementing energy efficiency measures. The roadmap will also help Maldives to implement changes required to provide sustainable clean energy to the communities using modern renewable technologies suitable for the country. This is the first time a roadmap has been developed for the energy sector to improve the sector.
