His Excellency Mr. Ali Shareef is the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives, leading national efforts to protect the environment, address climate change, and ensure the delivery of essential services including energy, water, sewerage, and waste management. Prior to his appointment, he served as Special Envoy for Climate Change at the President’s Office.

With over 20 years of experience across the public and private sectors—including the Maldives Meteorological Service and the Ministry of Environment’s Climate Change Department—he has played a central role in shaping climate and environmental policy. His work spans policy formulation, and the implementation and reporting of national and international programmes on climate change adaptation and mitigation. He has represented the Maldives in key international bodies, including the Katowice Committee of Experts (KCI), the Adaptation Committee (AC), the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG), and the Consultative Group of Experts (CGE). He has also been a member of the Maldives delegation to UNFCCC negotiations and served as a Lead Author for Working Group III of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report.

Minister Shareef holds a postgraduate degree in Atmospheric Science and Numerical Modelling from the University of Canterbury and a bachelor’s degree in Meteorology and Oceanography from the University of Flinders, South Australia.
