Ministry Presents the Maldives’ Third National Climate Action Plan

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment held a workshop on 4 February 2025 at Meeruma to present the Maldives’ Third National Climate Action Plan, with a focus on its mitigation targets. The plan outlines the Maldives’ strategies for advancing climate action and strengthening national resilience against climate change.

The workshop commenced with opening remarks by Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, who emphasized the importance of the Third Climate Action Plan in shaping the Maldives’ climate future. He highlighted the Ministry’s efforts over the past year, particularly the extensive stakeholder consultations conducted throughout the plan’s formulation process. The Minister also underscored the involvement of all key actors, emphasizing the identification of sub-national climate ambitions and the exploration of implementation strategies through regional stakeholder consultations. Minister Thoriq emphasized that the Maldives’ new Climate Action Plan is the most ambitious to date, demonstrating the nation’s unwavering commitment to climate leadership, despite its negligible contribution to global emissions. He further highlighted that the plan incorporates enhanced efforts in key adaptation areas, which are crucial for the Maldives’ resilience and require significant attention and support from the international community.

Following the Minister’s address, the Climate Change Department of the Ministry delivered technical presentations, detailing the preparation process of the Climate Action Plan and the methodology used to establish its mitigation targets. The discussions centered on key mitigation efforts and strategies to achieve the nation’s climate goals.

The workshop also featured an in-depth session on cross-cutting areas critical to the successful implementation of the NDC. These included Finance, Technology, Climate Empowerment, Gender, Children and Youth, and Climate Advocacy, Education and Awareness.

The session concluded with closing remarks by Director General Amjad Abdulla, who reiterated the crucial role of stakeholders in the successful completion of the action plan. He also emphasized the need for continued support in implementing the targets and goals outlined in the plan.

The Third National Climate Action Plan reaffirms the Maldives’ commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing climate resilience, and fostering sustainable development in alignment with the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement. The Ministry remains dedicated to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure its effective implementation.
