The Ministry of Tourism and Environment held a stakeholder workshop on 27 May 2025 to present and discuss the proposed methodology for tracking mitigation actions in the energy and waste sectors. The workshop was conducted under the project “Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives)”, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The objective of the workshop was to present the proposed methodology and indicators being developed to support the tracking of mitigation actions aligned with the Maldives’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The consultation provided an opportunity for stakeholders to give feedback on key indicators, assumptions, and data requirements. A breakout session and group discussions were conducted to further deliberate on the indicators and data needs.
The workshop was conducted by Riyan Private Limited in association with Grant Thornton Bharat LLP, under the consultancy for tracking mitigation actions as part of the CBIT Maldives project.
A total of 38 participants attended the workshop, including representatives from the Climate Change Department, Energy Department, Waste and Pollution Control Department, Air Quality Unit, and Ozone Unit of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. Other participating institutions included the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Utility Regulatory Authority (URA), WAMCO, STELCO, MWSC, STO, MACL, MPL and Maldives National University (MNU).
The development of tracking tools is an important part of strengthening the Maldives’ capacity to meet the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) requirements of the Paris Agreement. These tools will support the monitoring, validation, and reporting of mitigation actions and contribute to national climate reporting processes.
