The Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment successfully conducted a full-day hands-on training workshop on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimation from non-energy sectors on 15th July 2025. The training was conducted under the Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives) Project , which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the Ministry, with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The training focused on enhancing technical skills related to GHG inventory development for the Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) and Waste sectors, aligning with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines and in support of the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement. Participants were introduced to IPCC inventory tools, QA/QC procedures, and hands-on data processing exercises using national datasets.
The training was delivered by Mr. Zammath Khaleel of Development Advisory Services (DAS) Pvt Ltd, under the consultancy for GHG Inventory Expert through the CBIT Maldives Project.
The workshop was opened by the Special Envoy for Climate Change, His Excellency Ali Shareef, who provided an overview of the training and emphasized its importance in strengthening national capacity for climate reporting.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all participants who successfully completed the training. At the closing ceremony, the Minister of State for Tourism and Environment, His Excellency Ibrahim Mimrah, highlighted the importance of building institutional capacity to support transparent and credible climate reporting.
A total of 20 participants attended the training. Participants included representatives from the Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Utility Regulatory Authority, Maldives Customs Services, Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), and the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO). In addition, officials from the Climate Change Department, Ozone Unit, Air Quality Unit, Waste and Pollution Control Department, and Water and Sanitation Department of the Ministry also took part in the training.
This training supports national efforts to track and report emissions in alignment with the Maldives’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs).
