The Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment has successfully concluded a two-day training workshop on Transport Sector Emission Inventory Development, held from 21 to 22 July 2025 at Malé. The training was conducted to strengthen the capacity of national stakeholders in accurately quantifying, monitoring, and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transport sector.
The workshop was organized under the project “Develop Emission Inventories for the Transport Sector,” funded by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment), in collaboration with the ‘Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives’ (CBIT Maldives) project. The CBIT Maldives project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the Ministry, with support from UN Environment.
The training was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Tourism and Environment, His Excellency Ibrahim Mimrah, who emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional capacity to develop comprehensive emission inventories.

A total of 14 participants from a range of public and private institutions attended the workshop. The training targeted professionals involved in energy and transport data management, climate change mitigation, planning, and GHG inventory development, as well as those tracking Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The sessions were delivered by Yeonju Jeong, Asia-Pacific Sustainable Mobility Lead at UN Environment, and Dr. Ekbordin Winijkul from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The training featured technical presentations, practical exercises, demonstrations of emission calculation tools, and interactive group work to enhance participants’ understanding and application of inventory methodologies and Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) frameworks.

At the closing ceremony, certificates of participation were awarded by Minister of State Ibrahim Mimrah to participants who successfully completed the training. In his closing remarks, the State Minister extended his heartfelt appreciation to the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the UN Environment Programme, and the Asian Institute of Technology for delivering insightful sessions.
