The Climate Change Department conducts a CRVA Validation Workshop in Fuvahmulah City

14 May 2026

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy conducted a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) sharing workshop in Fuvahmulah City under the Advancing the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) of the Maldives project, bringing together stakeholders to share the findings and strengthen locally informed climate adaptation planning for the city. The workshop was opened by remarks from the Fuvahmulah City Council Mayor, Ismail Rafeeq and the Climate Change Department’s Director, Thibyan Ibrahim.

The workshop featured presentations on the NAP process and the climate risk and vulnerability assessment findings by Senior Climate Change Adaptation Consultant from the NAP Global Network, Jauza Khaleel and climate change expert, Mareer Mohamed Husny. The Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment presented during the workshop highlighted key climate hazards, including flooding, coastal erosion, and swell wave impacts, based on local consultations and technical analysis. The session also examined existing adaptation responses such as stormwater management systems, flood gates, mangrove planting, and emergency response measures, while gathering stakeholder feedback to validate local climate risk priorities and identify practical pathways for strengthening resilience.

Held as part of the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to strengthen national adaptation planning, the workshop forms part of the Green Climate Fund-funded NAP readiness project, implemented by the Ministry with support from the United Nations Environment Programme. The project aims to strengthen institutional coordination for adaptation planning, improve evidence-based decision-making, enhance private sector engagement, and mobilize adaptation finance to support long-term climate resilience planning in the Maldives.

The workshop was supported by the following officials from the Climate Change Department: Principal Environment Management Officer Fathimath Zaina Shareef, Senior Environment Management Officer Ahmed Masoon Hassan and Senior Environment Management Officer Raniya Husnu Al Suood, NAP Project Administrative and Finance Officer Hawwa Dhaiba, Izman Suhail Climate Adaptation Analyst and Climate Change Expert Aishath Aileen Niyaz.
