Contract Awarded to develop Energy Efficiency Guideline for buildings

Contract to develop energy efficiency guideline for Buildings has been signed between the Ministry and Price Waterhouse Coopers Private Limited. At the ceremony held at the Ministry, Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan signed the contract on behalf of the Ministry and Director, Mr. Prasanta Kumar Misra, Signed the contract on behalf of Price Waterhouse Coopers Private Limited.

The objective of the assignment is to develop a locally appropriate energy efficiency guideline and certification scheme which can be adopted by financing institutions in assessing approval for beneficial conditions applicable to energy efficiency financing.

Under the contract, the consultant will develop energy efficiency guidelines for residential buildings, commercial buildings, government building and for hotels and guest houses.

It is intended to make that information readily accessible for the public in order to help the building professionals in obtaining information about the relative efficiency and costs of design alternatives.

The energy efficiency guideline will be used by architects, engineers, lighting designers, contractors, building owners, and others making decisions about the design of buildings and their systems.

This activity is carried out by the Ministry under the “Strengthening Low Carbon Energy Island Strategies” (LCEI) project. LCEI project is funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Energy with support from UN Environment. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency in the building sector. This will be achieved by developing appropriate policies, guidelines and standards and through public education and advocacy and by leveraging substantial investment in activities leading to increased energy efficiency; which will result in improved buildings and building management practices in the Maldives.
